A Love Letter to Long Island: My Home Away from Home

Long Island isn’t just where I am from, it’s a part of me. Even though I moved to New Jersey three years ago, my heart still belongs to the salty air, crashing waves, and vibrant energy of this island. There’s just something about knowing you can hit the beach in any direction, cruise down the Robert Moses Bridge, or spend the night singing along to a concert at Jones Beach.

I was lucky enough to live just a few blocks from a marina, which made my love for the water inevitable. Kayaking, paddleboarding, or just taking in the view with a coffee in hand! being an island girl means water is always calling. And it’s not just about the beaches; Long Island is a playground of adventure, no matter the season.

Fall and summer bring trips to the farms and sunflower fields, and a stop at the Riverhead Ciderhouse is a must- especially for a glass of their cinnamon toast cider (a personal favorite!). Dinner on the water? You can’t go wrong with View in Oakdale or The Lakehouse in Bayshore, where you get delicious food paired with waterfront serenity. I’ve included some photos with names of some of our favorite places to eat.

For a quiet escape, Planting Fields Arboretum offers a tropical oasis, while Avalon Park in Stony Brook is a magical retreat with harbor views, a handmade wooden bridge, and a glass ball where you can leave messages for loved ones who have passed. Feeling adventurous? Montauk’s Shadmoor State Park offers breathtaking cliffside hikes overlooking the ocean.

And of course, no trip back home is complete without a visit to some true Long Island icons. The Big Duck in Riverhead (especially festive during Christmas) is a quirky landmark and souvenir shop. A selfie at the Robert Moses Lighthouse is a must, preferably after a walk along the beach collecting seashells.

To wrap up the perfect day? Dang BBQ for smoky, flavorful bites or a burger at Burgerology because a good meal is always the best ending. And if you really want to soak it all in, the South Shore sunset is unbeatable, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink as you breathe in the salty ocean air.

Long Island, you will always be home. Until next time!
