Back to Isla Mujeres: A Honeymoon in Paradise

In 2023, we returned to the breathtaking Isla Mujeres this time for our honeymoon! Like I mentioned in my last Mexico blog, this island was so beautiful that we just had to come back. But this time, we were a little older, a little wiser, and a little more focused on pure relaxation rather than packed excursions.

Choosing Familiarity for Our Special Trip

For our honeymoon, we wanted to visit a place we already knew and loved. Booking through Nexus Destinations made the process seamless, and a special shout-out goes to Mrs. Cynthia, who was incredible to work with ,trustworthy, helpful, and always making sure our trip went smoothly.

This time, instead of staying at Mia Reef Resort (where we stayed last time, a more family-friendly resort), we opted for Privilege Aluxes, an adults-only resort. From the huge pools to the beautiful rooms, everything about this place felt magical and romantic, exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon.

Exploring the Island’s The Perfect Balance of Old and New

Just like last time, we rented a golf cart to explore the island’s must-do when visiting Isla Mujeres! It only takes about an hour to drive the entire island, and it’s the best way to take in the sights at your own pace.

Some of our favorite spots included:

  •  The Crayola House- A vibrant, rainbow-colored home that stands out in the residential area of the island.

  • The Ruins at Punta Sur Located at the island’s southern tip, this spot offers breathtaking ocean views and a bit of history.

However, one stop that left us heartbroken was Tortugranja, the island’s beloved turtle sanctuary, which had closed down. On our last visit, this place was a highlight, seeing baby turtles up close and learning about conservation efforts made for an unforgettable experience. To return and find it no longer there was truly disappointing. It’s such a loss for the island, and we can only hope another conservation effort takes its place in the future.

A Feast for the Senses

One thing that never changes? The incredible food on Isla Mujeres. We dined at amazing local spots, enjoyed fresh seafood, and even got serenaded by a mariachi band- such a special moment! To top it all off, we watched a fire show, which left us absolutely mesmerized. The level of talent on this tiny island is truly impressive.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

If you’re planning your own trip to Isla Mujeres, here are a couple of things to note:

1. Rent a Golf Cart. It’s hands-down the best way to get around, and the island is small enough that you can see everything in just a few hours.

2. Be Prepared for Tourist Traps. A big difference this time around was the increase in aggressive street vendors, especially near the ferry area. The street next to the ferry is now lined with shops, and vendors will actively approach you, urging you to buy things. Unfortunately, you can’t avoid this area, so just be ready for it.

3. Soak in the Island’s Beauty! Despite the minor changes, Isla Mujeres still offers some of the most stunning beaches, clear blue waters, and delicious food you’ll find in Mexico. There was nothing like the sunsets!! Make sure you catch a sunset.

Final Thoughts

Returning to Isla Mujeres for our honeymoon was the best decision we could have made. It was a mix of nostalgia and new experiences, offering us the perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, and romance. Though we were saddened by the loss of Tortugranja, the island still held its magic, and we cherished every moment.

Would we go back again? Without a doubt!
