Isla Mujeres, Mexico- 2018

In 2018, my now-husband and I embarked on our very first international plane ride to the beautiful Isla Mujeres, Mexico. After flying into Cancun, we hopped on a ferry to this colorful island, which felt like a slice of paradise. With vibrant streets, breathtaking views, and plenty of activities, Isla Mujeres was the perfect destination for young adventurers like us!
Our Stay at Mia Reef Hotel
We stayed at the stunning Mia Reef Hotel, a private island resort that felt like its own little oasis. Located at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, Mia Reef is known for its incredible views of turquoise waters and easy access to snorkeling spots. The hotel also has a unique private area called the “The Kings Bath” a natural tidal pool surrounded by coral formations. Bathing in this serene spot was a highlight of our trip!

Snorkeling and Whale Sharks
We spent hours snorkeling around the hotel island, marveling at the colorful marine life. One of the most unforgettable experiences was swimming with a whale shark. These gentle giants are the largest fish in the ocean, and getting up close to one was a surreal moment. While I dont have photos, I do have a video to remember this once-in-a-lifetime encounter!
Golf Cart Adventures and Templo de la Diosa Ixchel
One of the best ways to explore Isla Mujeres is by golf cart, so we rented one and set out to see the island. We visited the Templo de la Diosa Ixchel, an ancient Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, and love. The ruins are perched on a cliff, offering stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding island.

Chichén Itzá: A Tour Through History
We took a day tour to the iconic Chichén Itza one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This ancient Mayan city is home to the impressive El Castillo (the Temple of Kukulcán), a pyramid with 365 steps that align with the sun during the spring and fall equinoxes. Fun memory: we were gifted a bottle of Mayan liquor with our faces on the label!

Tortugranja: A Turtle Lover’s Paradise
As a turtle enthusiast (I own one turtle and two tortoises!), I was thrilled to visit Tortugranja, a turtle sanctuary and rescue center. We saw adorable baby turtles, learned about conservation efforts, and appreciated the dedication to preserving these incredible creatures.

An Island for Young Adventurers
Isla Mujeres was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure for us as young adults. From exploring ancient ruins to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, the island offered endless fun and unforgettable experiences.

Full Circle: Returning for Our Honeymoon
We loved Isla Mujeres so much that we came back for our honeymoon in 2023! That trip was just as magical and full of new memories, but you’ll have to check out my separate blog post for those details.
