7 States in 7 Days: A Road Trip Adventure with My Mom

Road trips have a way of creating unforgettable memories, and our journey through seven states in seven days was no exception. My mom and I embarked on a whirlwind adventure, hitting major landmarks, visiting family, and sampling local flavors. It was a week of laughter, exploration, and plenty of miles on the road. Here’s how it all unfolded!
Day 1: New Jersey and Pennsylvania
Our trip began in New York, passing through New Jersey and Pennsylvania. While we didn’t make any major stops, just driving through counts right? These first two states served as a warm-up for the adventures to come. We did make a pit stop for a Philly cheesesteak and drop by to see the liberty bell in PA!

Day 2: West Virginia- The Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel
Our first memorable stop was in West Virginia, where we drove through the famous Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel. Located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, this 1.1-mile-long tunnel cuts through the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The drive offered breathtaking views of the rolling hills and valleys that West Virginia is known for.
Fun Fact: The Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel is one of four tunnels still in operation on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and was originally built in the 1940s.

Day 3: Ohio - The Longaberger Basket Building
Ohio brought one of the quirkiest stops of the trip: the Longaberger Basket Building. This seven-story office building, shaped like a giant picnic basket, is a true roadside wonder. Though the company has long since closed, the building remains a fascinating and unusual landmark.
Fun Fact: The Longaberger Basket Building weighs over 9,000 tons and was completed in 1997. Its handles are even heated to prevent ice from forming in the winter!

Day 4: Chicago, Illinois
Our next major stop was Chicago, where we spent time with my uncle and explored the Windy City’s famous food scene. Portillo’s was a highlight with its Italian beef sandwiches and chocolate cake shake were absolute standouts. We couldn’t leave Chicago without trying deep-dish pizza, and it did not disappoint! I give them both 10/10.

Day 5: Indiana
We crossed into Indiana and spent the night near the border in Jeffersonville/Louisville, an area affectionately called “Kentuckiana.” We checked out a massive Bass Pro Shop, which was almost like a theme park in itself. We certainly don’t have that in New York. We also got our first taste of that unpredictable Midwest weather. One minute it was sunny, the next it was overcast and windy!
Fun Fact: The Jeffersonville area is known for its Big Four Bridge, a pedestrian and cycling bridge that connects Indiana and Kentucky across the Ohio River. You can see the bridge in the photo!

Day 6: Kentucky
In Kentucky, we visited the iconic Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby. While it was exciting to see such a famous venue, the surrounding area told a different story. We noticed many abandoned homes and signs of economic struggle, which added a somber note to our visit.

By the time we hit the road for our final leg back home, we had traveled through seven states, seen iconic landmarks, and made memories that we’ll cherish forever. From the natural beauty of Pennsylvania to the bustling streets of Chicago, each stop offered something unique.
Our 7 states in 7 days road trip was a whirlwind, but it was also an incredible bonding experience for my mom and me. It’s amazing how much you can see and do in just a week when you’re open to adventure.
